LITURGY OF THE HOURS, THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

First Evening Prayer

The Hymn is Audi, Benigne Conditor (Kind Maker of the World, Give Ear).

The Psalms are from Week I, with the following antiphons

            1.  Lord God, we ask you to receive us and be pleased

                 with the sacrifices we offer you this day with humble and contrite hearts.

            2.  Call upon the Lord and he will hear you;

                 cry out and he will answer, here I am.

            3.  Christ died for our sins, the innocent for the guilty,

                 to bring us back to God.  In the body he was put to death,

                 but in the spirit he was raised to life.

The Reading is II Corinthians 6: 1-4a, which echoes what was proclaimed on Ash Wednesday.  This reading is used every Sunday at Evening Prayer I until Lent V.

The Responsory “Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy,” is used every Sunday at

Evening Prayer until Lent V.

The Magnificat is sung with the antiphon from tomorrow’s Gospel:

            Man cannot live on bread alone,

            but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

The Intercessions and Prayer are proper to Lent I.

Morning Prayer

The Hymn is Audi, Benigne Conditor (Kind Maker of the World, Give Ear).

The Psalms are from Week I, with the following antiphons

            1.  Worship your Lord and God; serve him alone.

            2.  This is the time when you can win God’s favor;

                 the day when you can be saved.

            3.  Now we must go up to Jerusalem, where all that has

                 been written about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.

The Reading is I Corinthians 9: 24-27, urging us to do our Lenten discipline “for a wreath that will never wither.”  This reading is used every Sunday at Evening Prayer II until Lent V.

The Responsory “Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy,” is used every Sunday at

Evening Prayer until Lent V.

The Magnificat is sung with this antiphon:

            Watch over us, eternal Savior.

            Do not let the cunning tempter seize us.

            We place all our trust in your unfailing help.

The Intercessions and Prayer are proper to Lent I.
