LITURGY OF THE HOURS, THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

First Evening Prayer

The Hymn is Audi, Benigne Conditor (Kind Maker of the World, Give Ear).

The Psalms are from Week II, with the following antiphons, derived from

the Gospel proclaimed on this Sunday (i.e., the Transfiguration).

            1.  Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John

and led them up a high mountain.

There he was transfigured before them.

            2.  His face was radiant as the sun,

and his clothing white as snow.

            3.  Moses and Elijah were speaking to him

of the death he would endure in Jerusalem.

The Reading is II Corinthians 6: 1-4a, which echoes what was proclaimed on Ash Wednesday.  This reading is used every Sunday at Evening Prayer I until Lent V.

The Responsory “Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy,” is used every Sunday at

Evening Prayer until Lent V.

The Magnificat is sung with the antiphon from tomorrow’s Gospel:

A voice spoke from the cloud:  This is my beloved

Son in whom I am well pleased; listen to him.

The Intercessions and Prayer are proper to Lent II.

Morning Prayer

The Hymn is Audi, Benigne Conditor (Kind Maker of the World, Give Ear).

The Psalms are from Week II, with the following antiphons

            1.  In holy splendor,

the Lord will send forth your mighty scepter from Zion.

            2.  We worship the one true God

                 who made heaven and earth.

            3.  God did not spare his own Son,

but gave him up for us all.

The Reading is I Corinthians 9: 24-27, urging us to do our Lenten discipline “for a wreath that will never wither.”  This reading is used every Sunday at Evening Prayer II until Lent V.

The Responsory “Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy,” is used every Sunday at

Evening Prayer until Lent V.

The Magnificat is sung with this antiphon, from today’s Gospel:

Tell no one about the vision you have seen

until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.

The Intercessions and Prayer are proper to Lent II.
