Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, C

            Isaiah 62:1-5

            Ps. 96

            I Corinthians 12:4-11

            John 2:1-12

The Scriptures for today find their common ground in wedding imagery .  The First Reading, from the book of the prophet Isaiah, sings of the ‘vindication’ of Jerusalem after the exile, ending with the phrase, “as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so shall your God rejoice in you.”  The Responsorial Psalm responds to the mighty acts of God in restoring Israel from her exile, by singing “Proclaim His marvelous deeds to all the nations!”  Today’s Gospel gives the pericope of the first miracle of Jesus, changing water into wine at Cana of Galilee.  This selection is one of the three “epiphanies” referred to in the texts of the Liturgy of the Hours on January 6.  The Church has long seen this miracle as a type of Baptism.  Faustus of Rietz wrote:  “To those who see only with the outward eye, all these events at Cana are strange and wonderful; to those who understand, they are also signs. For, if we look closely, the very water tells us of our rebirth in baptism.  One thing is turned into another from within, and in a hidden way a lesser creature is changed into a greater.  All this points to the hidden reality of our second birth.  There water was suddenly changed; later it will cause a change in man.”

For the Second Reading, we will hear the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians for the next eight weeks.  On this Sunday, Paul tells us about the unity of the triune God and the diversity of the Church:

                        Different gifts, same Spirit;

                        Different ministries, same Lord;

                        Different works, same God.

No matter the gift or the deed, it comes from God and must be used to serve God.

This hymn is based on today’s Scriptures:

The dawn of vindication

Is seen on Zion's heights;

The work of God is shown forth

And titled "My delight."

The Lord has married Israel,

Made her a glorious crown,

And all her foes' destruction

As waste is leveled down.

As Jesus wrought His wonders

At Cana's wedding feast,

Renewing old, transforming

The greatest and the least,

So too He works His marvels

In each believing in heart,

Reforming lives that falter

With love as faultless chart.

The Spirit works within us

In many, varied ways;

One God, who gives the faithful

Their needs through endless days.

No gift is meant for hoarding:

The Body needs each one

That it may surely prosper

And glorify God's Son.
