LITURGY OF THE HOURS, THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

 

First Evening Prayer

 

The Hymn is Audi, Benigne Conditor (Kind Maker of the World, Give Ear).

 

The Psalms are from Week III, with the following antiphons:

           

            1.  The Lord says:  Turn away from sin

     and open your hearts to the Gospel.

            2.  I will offer a sacrifice of praise

                 and call upon the name of the Lord.

            3.  No one takes my life away from me;

                 I lay it down freely and I shall take it up again.

 

The Reading is II Corinthians 6: 1-4a, which echoes what was proclaimed on Ash Wednesday.  This reading is used every Sunday at Evening Prayer I until Lent V.

 

The Responsory “Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy,” is used every Sunday at

Evening Prayer until Lent V.

 

The Magnificat is sung with the antiphon:

            Now that we have been justified by faith,

            let us be at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

 

The Intercessions and Prayer are proper to Lent III.

 

Morning Prayer

 

The Hymn is Audi, Benigne Conditor (Kind Maker of the World, Give Ear).

 

The Psalms are from Week III, with the following antiphons

           

            1.  Lord, all-powerful King, free us for the sake of your name.

                 Give us time to turn from our sins.

            2.  We have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ,

                 the lamb without blemish.

            3.  Ours were the sufferings he bore;

                 ours the torments he endured.

 

The Reading is I Corinthians 9: 24-27, urging us to do our Lenten discipline “for a wreath that will never wither.”  This reading is used every Sunday at Evening Prayer II until Lent V.

 

The Responsory “Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy,” is used every Sunday at

Evening Prayer until Lent V.

            Whoever drinks the water that I shall give

            will never be thirsty again, says the Lord.
