The Liturgy of the Hours

This Web page is meant largely as an experiment. First of all, it is my own experiment with finding a suitable format for presenting liturgical material, particularly chant, on the Web. The more important experiment, however, is the material itself. We have been developing musical settings for celebrating the Liturgy of the Hours. Most, though not all, of the material is in English. Most, though not all, is derived from Gregorian melodies, adapted to English text. Except where noted, these adaptations are my own.

I will appreciate any suggestions about this material, either about the format for presentation, or, more importantly, the style and method used for setting the English text to English, or adapting the melodies for celebration. I also would appreciate being informed of any errors in the text, typographical, or otherwise.

Comments can be directed to me at trjack@groupz.net.

For the most part I have tried to use the current official approved texts for the Divine Office. The English is found in The Liturgy of the Hours, published by Catholic Book Publishing Company, 1975. The Latin is found in the various editio typica of the Vatican editions of the appropriate liturgical books. Occasionally, other sources are used. In general, the melodies used are from the melodies from the Latin sources, though sometimes other melodies are found to be more suitable, or new compositions prepared in the same style as the Gregrorian repertoire.

The Vespers of the Assumption which follows was prepared for use at Saint Mary Help of Christians Parish, in the Diocese of Charleston.
